Introduction

  • Christ is here going to Calvary.
  • These women were sympathetic.
  • But our Lord chides them for this.
  1. CHRIST AND HIS PEOPLE DO NOT NEED WORLDLY PITY

    1. "Weep not for me": Lost sinners... for Christ
    2. It is foolish for sinners to pity Christ:
      1. He was marching to glory and victory
      2. His sufferings would change the world
      3. These sufferings were a covenant plan
      4. Christ not a helpless victim. Explain.
      5. These sufferings are for faith, not pity.
      6. The way of the cross is the way to glory.
OBSERVE: So for Christians, e.g. the martyrs.
  2. RATHER, THE WORLDLY SHOULD PITY THEMSELVES

    1. "Weep for yourselves": Sinners for themselves.
    2. The sinners of this world need pity:
      1. Christ here refers to AD 70. Details.
      2. AD 70 was a foreshadowing of Judgement
      3. We see that from v. 30 // Rev. 6:16
      4. The "green tree" and "the dry" (v. 31)
      5. So: "If the righteous..." (1 Peter 4:17-18)
      6. The lost have to answer for their own sins
      7. The lost are exposed to God's naked justice
      APPLICATION: O pity the lost!
Pity them as they die without Christ! (TEXT)
  3. THE RIGHT WAY IS TO SEE CHRIST HERE AS SUFFERING, NOT FOR HIMSELF, BUT FOR US

    1. Our eternal destiny will be determined by how we look at Christ's sufferings:
      1. These women: sentimental unbelief
      2. But the thief (v.42) had faith. Proofs.
      3. So did the centurion (v. 47)
OBSERVE: Beware of sentimental religion (the crib at Christmas/ the "Mother and Child"/the crucifix and the "pitiable Christ").
DOCTRINE: Not Christ, but sinners, are to be pitied. You don't pity CHRIST!!
    2. Faith looks at Christ as to a Saviour:
      1. The Passover Lamb of Exodus
      2. The Suffering Saviour of Isaiah 53. Compare v. 4-5 (unbelief and faith)
      3. The lament of Lam. 1:12
      4. The Smitten Shepherd of Zech. 13:7
OBSERVE: There is no place for pity - but only for gratitude, trust, love, faith.
ILLUSTRATION: The covenanting preacher who arrested rebels against the King.

CONCLUSION

Are you sheltering under His blood?

ILLUSTRATION

The Jewish girl who was afraid the blood was not on their doorpost.
